Coral Restoration

You've probably seen the link at the right side of this Blog to the Coral Restoration Foundation. Since our Mac is temporarily kaput and we can't readily blog, skype or anything else interesting related to our personal lives, I thought I would share some of the great work that Ken Nedemyer and friends are doing to restore coral in the Florida Keys.

Here is a photo of the latest project- restoration of Elkhorn (Acropora palmata) coral. This is the first Elkhorn nursery around, as far as I know.

Ken has been working hard to restore Staghorn (Acropora cervicornis) coral for quite a while, with the help of students from Coral Shores High School in Tavernier, and many other friends, including our parents! If you are old enough (like me) to remember the remarkable "thickets" of Staghorn coral that used to exist on the reefs in the Keys before storms and man-made influences reduced them drastically then I think you'll really appreciate the great work that is being done.

Here is a photo of Joe and Sandi helping out at the Staghorn nursery:

If you may be interested in adopting a coral, or even a coral head or something larger please check out the Coral Restoration Foundation website.
